Synopsis

Mad Season perform "River of Deceit" in stark black-and-white footage, with Layne Staley, Mike McCready, John Baker Saunders, and Barrett Martin captured during a live rendition. The performance is intercut with brief, observational images of people absorbed in everyday activities, creating a detached counterpoint to the song's confessional mood. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video emphasizes atmosphere, the band's subdued intensity, and Staley's exposed vocal performance.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed during Mad Season's New Year's Eve 1994 performance at Seattle's RKCNDY club. It functions as a live performance clip rather than a scripted narrative video.

• "River of Deceit" was released in March 1995 as the lead single from Mad Season's only studio album, *Above*. It became the band's best-known song and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

• The video is notable for its monochrome presentation, which matches the song's restrained, melancholy character instead of using the more elaborate visual effects common in mid-1990s rock videos.

• It was the only official music video Mad Season released. The clip was later included with the band's *Live at the Moore* home-video material and on the expanded 2013 edition of *Above*.

• The song's lyrics were partly influenced by Khalil Gibran's 1923 book *The Prophet*, which Layne Staley was reading while Mad Season made the album.
