Synopsis

Shot in stark black and white, the video follows K-Ci, JoJo, and Mr. Dalvin as they ride through Charlotte on top of a bus. Along the way, they gather people from basketball courts, front steps, and neighborhood streets, turning an ordinary city journey into a moving block party. The growing crowd eventually forms a celebratory parade around the bus, with residents dancing and responding to the song's upbeat invitation to leave their seats and join the fun.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video uses Charlotte, North Carolina, as its visual setting. Charlotte was also the city where Jodeci was formed.
  • The black-and-white cinematography gives the clip a documentary-like street feel, setting it apart from the more polished romantic and nightclub-oriented R&B videos commonly associated with Jodeci in the mid-1990s.
  • The bus serves as the video's central moving stage. Rather than placing the group in a conventional performance venue, the production brings the performance directly into neighborhood streets.
  • The crowd is built from everyday scenes, including basketball, sidewalk gatherings, and children playing. The result is less a scripted storyline than a community procession that grows as the song continues.
  • "Get On Up" was produced by Mr. Dalvin and written by Dalvin DeGrate with K-Ci and JoJo. It was the only Jodeci single not produced or written by DeVante Swing.
  • DeVante Swing does not appear in the video, even though he remained part of Jodeci and contributed background vocals to the recording.
  • The song contains a sample from "Velas," a 1981 composition by Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins, performed by Quincy Jones featuring Toots Thielemans.
  • Released as the third and final single from 1995's "The Show, the After Party, the Hotel," it became Jodeci's last single before the group returned with new music in 2014.

Lyrics

Said it sounds so good to me
You gotta get on up now
Say it again, Jodeci
Get on up
You gotta get on up now
Wait a minute, let me tell you
Everybody grab somebody
Turn this mutha into a party
Fellas take your lady's hand
Ladies go and choose your man
There's no need to be afraid
Friday night, let's all get payed
Positive is the attitude
