Synopsis

Joan Jett and The Blackhearts arrive at a small Manhattan bar, where Jett spots a young man by the jukebox and draws him into the band's world. As the group launches into "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," the initially detached patrons become an increasingly enthusiastic audience. Jett performs with swagger from the stage and among the crowd, turning the rough neighborhood hangout into a loud, communal rock show. The black-and-white presentation gives the video a stark, rebellious club atmosphere.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed at Privates, a bar at the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 85th Street on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The location later became a Starbucks.
  • It opens with a brief snippet of "Bad Reputation" before the main song begins.
  • The footage was originally shot in color but was converted to black and white because Joan Jett disliked the appearance of her red leather jumpsuit in the color version.
  • Heavy rotation on the fledgling MTV helped make the clip one of the defining rock videos of the early 1980s.
  • Joan Jett's hit is a cover of a 1975 song by the British band Arrows, written by singer Alan Merrill and guitarist Jake Hooker.
  • The original video should not be confused with the separate version made for the 1993 film "Wayne's World 2."
