Synopsis

In an empty white room, Garth Brooks performs at a white grand piano while dressed in a matching white suit. As the song builds, red, blue, and green paint begins splashing across Brooks, the piano, and the stark surroundings. During the instrumental break, a second version of Brooks appears in darker clothing, adding to the video's surreal, theatrical mood. The performance gradually becomes a full-color spectacle before returning to its pristine opening image, ending with red paint running down the screen.

Factoids & Trivia

• The opening image of Brooks and the piano rising from a pool of red paint was achieved practically, not through digital effects. The footage was shot with the piano being lowered into the paint and then played in reverse.

• The paint caused serious production problems. During the first attempt, it was so thick that the lowering mechanism jammed. Brooks also recalled that the paint was dangerously cold, causing him to hyperventilate as he was lowered into it. The mixture was later thinned with mud and water and warmed before filming resumed.

• Brooks said the opening sequence alone took two days to shoot. Approximately 35 gallons of red paint were used during the production, with much of it required for the initial pool.

• The overhead imagery and some of the close-ups of paint on Brooks' hands and feet were filmed by David Gant, a piano and fiddle player in Brooks' touring band.

• The video won the 1994 Academy of Country Music award for Music Video of the Year. Its striking use of color helped make the clip more widely remembered than the song's relatively modest U.S. country-chart performance.

• The paint-stained piano later became part of a display of Brooks memorabilia, alongside other artifacts from his career.

• The video's concept was later parodied in the Warren Brothers' "Sell a Lot of Beer."
