Synopsis

Dave Grohl arrives at his apartment carrying groceries, only to find the door chained shut from the inside. Through the peephole, he sees a shadowy version of Foo Fighters performing "Monkey Wrench." The rest of the band joins him outside, and a frantic struggle follows as they try to break in. Once inside, they discover the apartment empty, while the duplicate band escapes through the courtyard. The musicians then complete the song, only for another set of bandmates to appear outside the door.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was the first Foo Fighters clip to feature Taylor Hawkins on drums. The recorded drum part, however, was played by Dave Grohl.
  • A Muzak-style version of "Big Me," performed by The Moog Cookbook, plays during the elevator sequence.
  • The video was nominated for both Best Rock Video and Best Alternative Video at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards.
  • "Monkey Wrench" was the lead single from the Foo Fighters' second album, "The Colour and the Shape," released in 1997.
  • The song's central idea concerns a relationship in which the narrator recognizes that he is the source of the problems and believes the other person would be better off without him.
