Synopsis

Supergrass perform "Pumping On Your Stereo" as a surreal puppet band in an empty black space. Their real heads sit atop enormous, brightly colored bodies, which bounce, dance, and play bizarre oversized instruments while feather boas, Moai-style heads, and fireworks drift through the performance. The deliberately artificial staging turns a straightforward rock promo into a piece of comic visual theater. As the song ends, drummer Danny Goffey's head is knocked from his body and flies across the stage before landing against a speaker.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Jim Henson's Creature Shop built the giant puppet bodies, reported at roughly 12 to 15 feet tall, with the musicians' heads positioned on top.
  • The performers and puppeteers were dressed in black against the black set, allowing the puppeteers to disappear while the colorful figures appeared to move by themselves.
  • Around a dozen puppeteers were involved in operating the bodies, instruments, and additional creatures during the performance.
  • The closing gag with Danny Goffey's head became one of the video's most memorable images. His off-camera-sounding line, "Can we go home now?", is synchronized with the end of the recording.
  • The video helped make "Pumping On Your Stereo" one of Supergrass' most recognizable visual statements and was nominated for Breakthrough Video at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
  • The song's title contains an intentional joke: the band sang "humping" rather than "pumping" in the chorus, which is how the altered word is heard on the recording.
