Synopsis

Velocity Girl perform in a series of awkward, exaggerated department-store portrait sessions. Posing against bland studio backdrops, the band members cycle through forced smiles, stiff family-photo arrangements, and increasingly bizarre expressions and gestures. The deliberately cheap-looking setup turns the song's upbeat title into a joke about manufactured happiness, while the band's deadpan presence adds to the discomfort. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video builds its humor through repetition, unnatural poses, and the contrast between cheerful presentation and strange behavior.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video uses the visual language of Sears-style family portraits, with deliberately artificial smiles, formal poses, and generic studio presentation.
  • The exaggerated portrait-session concept has been identified as an early example of the awkward, grotesque comedy that became associated with Spike Jonze's music videos.
  • "I Can't Stop Smiling" was released in 1994 on Velocity Girl's Sub Pop album "Simpatico!" and also appeared as a single backed with "Marzipan."
  • The video was later included on "Sub Pop Video Network Program 3," issued in 1995.
  • The official version was uploaded to Sub Pop's YouTube channel in 2014, helping bring the clip to a wider audience decades after its original release.
  • The song was later included on the 1997 compilation "Poptopia! Power Pop Classics of the '90s," extending its life beyond the original Sub Pop release.
