Synopsis

"Bedrock Anthem" relocates the Red Hot Chili Peppers' funk-rock swagger to the prehistoric world of The Flintstones. The video opens with a send-up of Blind Melon's "No Rain," as the famous Bee Girl performs for an unimpressed audience. It then shifts into a colorful parody of the Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge" and "Give It Away" videos, with Weird Al Yankovic and his band wandering through a desert landscape while Flintstones imagery, cartoon clips, and surreal visual gags fill the frame.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video combines visual references to three major 1990s music videos: Blind Melon's "No Rain" and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge" and "Give It Away."
  • Heather DeLoach reprises her role as the Bee Girl from "No Rain." Her tap-dancing routine is interrupted when Jim West pushes her off the stage.
  • Yankovic and his band filmed the desert sequences in the same general area used for the "Give It Away" video, including landmarks associated with the original clip.
  • The song itself parodies two Red Hot Chili Peppers songs at once: "Under the Bridge" supplies the slower opening, while "Give It Away" provides the main funk-rock framework.
  • "Bedrock Anthem" was released on Yankovic's 1993 album Alapalooza and later appeared on the soundtrack to the 1994 live-action film The Flintstones.
  • The video incorporates footage and sound from the original Flintstones cartoon, tying the visual parody directly to the song's prehistoric setting.
  • Actor Dick Van Patten appears in the video, one of several celebrity cameos associated with Yankovic's early-1990s music-video work.
  • The clip was premiered at the 1993 Billboard Music Video Awards, where Yankovic was serving as host.
