Wiki

Synopsis

A woman in a suburban setting suddenly rises into the air, leaving ordinary life behind as the world around her breaks apart into a playful collage of floating objects, shifting landscapes, and surreal images. David Byrne and the other Talking Heads appear within the constantly moving visual field, their photographic likenesses manipulated in stop-motion to match the song's buoyant rhythm. The video turns the track's fantasy of escape and altered perception into a colorful, handmade dreamscape that feels both whimsical and strangely disorienting.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video uses cut-out and stop-motion collage animation, combining photographs, flat artwork, and live-action imagery rather than relying on conventional cartoon animation.
  • The band's members appear as photographed, two-dimensional figures whose poses and positions change incrementally from frame to frame.
  • The project grew out of an earlier animated short, "Suspicious Circumstances," which helped bring the Portland-based production team to the attention of Talking Heads.
  • Released in 1985 alongside the album *Little Creatures*, the video became one of the era's notable examples of surrealist music-video animation.
  • At the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards, it was nominated for Best Group Video and Best Concept Video. It lost both awards, with "Money for Nothing" winning Best Group Video and a-ha's "Take On Me" winning Best Concept Video.
