Synopsis
The Spice Girls burst into a grand London hotel and turn a formal gathering into their own unruly playground. Moving through corridors, staircases, and lavish rooms, they sing, dance, flirt with the camera, and playfully disrupt the guests around them. Each member gets moments that reflect her emerging persona, from Geri's flamboyant strut to Mel C's acrobatics. The loose, energetic presentation feels less like a staged performance than a spontaneous introduction to five friends determined to make noise on their own terms.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed in April 1996 inside the then-unused Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras station in London. The building is now the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel.
- Its apparently continuous camera movement was central to the video's appeal. The finished clip was created from two continuous shots, carefully edited to preserve the impression of one uninterrupted take.
- The original plan was to film in an exotic building in Barcelona. When permission fell through shortly before production, the hotel in London became the setting instead.
- The group rehearsed the route repeatedly through the night while a Steadicam operator followed them around the building. The cold conditions and physically demanding choreography contributed to the video's unpolished, spontaneous feel.
- Virgin executives reportedly disliked the dark, chaotic result and considered a reshoot or a separate version for the United States. The Spice Girls resisted, helping preserve the clip's distinctive introduction to their personalities.
- The video won Best Dance Video at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards. It was later included by Billboard among the most iconic girl-group videos of all time.
