Synopsis

In a grim industrial setting, Marilyn Manson appears as a grotesquely tall, bald figure surrounded by bizarre attendants, twitching performers, and unsettling close-ups of insects, machinery, and bodily imagery. The band performs amid stark shadows and decaying architecture while Manson is dressed and displayed like a tyrant preparing for a public spectacle. The imagery builds toward a fascist-style rally, with followers marching and raising their fists around him. Its nightmarish tableaux turn the song's attack on beauty, power, and conformity into a surreal political horror show.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed at the Gooderham and Worts Distillery in Toronto, an industrial complex that has since become part of the city's Distillery District.

• Its harsh, high-contrast appearance came partly from shooting on sound stock, a choice that made exposure particularly unforgiving. A small lighting error could leave portions of the footage unusably dark or washed out.

• Manson was reportedly unsure about appearing in a bald cap. The resulting hairless, elongated figure became one of the video's most recognizable images and intensified its authoritarian, almost inhuman presence.

• The visual language draws on German expressionism and propaganda-film imagery, using rigid group movement, theatrical staging, and exaggerated silhouettes to suggest mass control rather than a conventional performance narrative.

• The clip received three nominations at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards: Best Rock Video, Best Art Direction, and Best Special Effects.
