Synopsis

A trench-coated man enters a shabby French cafe late at night and orders a sandwich. While the regulars and bartender carry on with mundane conversation, the atmosphere gradually turns uncanny. The requested food never arrives, and the cafe slips into a disorienting nightmare of rapid cuts, distorted faces, colored lighting, masked figures, and a dancer. Laurent Garnier appears behind a DJ setup as the ordinary bar becomes a surreal, pulsing nightclub ruled by the escalating force of the music.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video is part of the approximately 15-minute short film "Nightmare Sandwiches," which combines "Deep Sea Diving," "The Hoe," and "Crispy Bacon" from Garnier's 1997 album "30."

• Rather than following a conventional performance-video format, the film uses the structure of a surreal short movie. The cafe setting, deadpan dialogue, unsettling close-ups, and sudden shifts in pace give the techno track a deliberately cinematic context.

• The project was an early collaboration between Garnier and Quentin Dupieux, who was then also known as Mr. Oizo. Dupieux later became widely known for his electronic music and feature films.

• Garnier said the film's absurdity was intentional. He wanted to counter the idea that techno culture was merely associated with drugs and show a more imaginative side of the scene.

• The name "Crispy Bacon" was reportedly written on the cassette containing the track. Jeff Mills disliked the title and suggested "Sizzling Bacon" instead, but Garnier kept the original name.

• "Crispy Bacon" became one of F Communications' major international successes, selling about 60,000 maxi-singles across Europe by June 1997.

• The short film was later included in F Communications' video catalog, alongside Garnier's "Flashback" and other label productions.
