Synopsis

The video presents Eurythmics in a bright, deliberately theatrical live-performance setting rather than a conventional narrative. Annie Lennox sings in a striking leopard-print outfit, shifting between poised vocalist and playful, characterful performer, while Dave Stewart plays guitar alongside the touring band and backing singers. Colorful staging, animated gestures and the song's Caribbean-flavored rhythm create a celebratory atmosphere. The result is a buoyant showcase of the duo's chemistry and visual style, matching the track's plea for closeness and emotional support.

Factoids & Trivia

• Filmed during the Touch tour, the clip was the first Eurythmics video to present the duo in a live-performance setting.

• The performance features the Croquettes, the backing vocalists who accompanied Eurythmics on the tour.

• The production took a relatively direct approach. Dave Stewart explained at the time that the duo wanted to avoid the overblown, Hollywood-style videos then becoming common for ordinary pop songs.

• Annie Lennox's leopard-print costume, complete with a matching pillbox-style hat, quickly became one of the most recognizable looks associated with the 1980s.

• A live image taken during the video shoot was later used on the cover of the Touch Dance release.

• The song itself marked a notable change of mood for Eurythmics. Its calypso-inspired arrangement, synthesized steel-drum sounds, marimba textures and horn parts provided a deliberately sunny contrast to much of the duo's darker early material.

• Released in 1983, "Right By Your Side" became Eurythmics' fourth consecutive UK Top 10 single that year.
