Synopsis

An old man tends a rural orchard, eats a piece of fruit, and dies on the grass. From there, the video runs backward through his life: the fruit returns to the tree, his marriage and family life unfold in reverse, and memories lead back to childhood. A white unicorn appears throughout the surreal imagery, reinforcing the theme of innocence. The final scenes show the man as a baby being baptized, completing the journey from death back to birth.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in Malaga, Spain.
  • Its reverse-chronology concept was linked by Michael Cretu to his interest in numerology, Hinduism, and the idea of life as an infinite circle.
  • The opening is presented in black and white before shifting into color as the story moves backward through the man's life.
  • The recurring white unicorn functions as a visual emblem of innocence and purity.
  • The clip received heavy rotation on MTV Europe and was placed on Germany's VIVA A-list in February 1994, where that status meant at least 30 plays per week.
  • The song's central chant came from Amis singers Difang and Igay Duana of Taiwan. Their vocals were initially used without proper credit, leading to a legal dispute that was settled out of court in 1999. Subsequent releases credited the performers.

Lyrics

That's not the beginning of the end
That's the return to yourself
The return to innocence.

Feeling - Emotion

Love - Devotion
Feeling - Emotion

Don't be afraid to be weak
Don't be too proud to be strong
Just look into your heart my friend
That will be the return to yourself
