Synopsis

Beck drifts through a surreal collage of California locations, strange characters, improvised performances, and deliberately rough film experiments. He appears in a white suit, wanders near a cemetery, handles a coffin, and briefly wears a stormtrooper mask, while stop-motion imagery, dancing figures, saturated colors, and distorted black-and-white footage collide with the song's loose, disorienting energy. Rather than following a conventional story, the video mirrors "Loser's" mix of folk, hip-hop, absurd humor, and outsider imagery.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video began as a small independent production. The initial shoot cost about $300, while Geffen Records later provided approximately $14,000 to process, edit, and master the 16mm footage, bringing the total budget to around $14,300.
  • Footage was shot at several California locations, including Carl Stephenson's Humboldt County studio and backyard, as well as a Santa Monica graveyard.
  • The finished video is assembled from numerous 16mm film fragments rather than being presented as a polished, continuous narrative. Its roughness was intentional and suited Beck's deliberately unrefined performance style.
  • The moving coffin was created through stop-motion animation. Two coffins were used: one borrowed from a local drama school and another built by Beck and Steve Hanft.
  • Several clips and sounds originated in Hanft's 1991 thesis film "Kill the Moonlight," a film about an unsuccessful stock-car racer. The connection also explains some of the video's recurring surreal and automotive imagery.
  • The clip of mountain dancer Jesco White is the only section filmed on video rather than film. It was added during the final day of editing.
  • Beck's stormtrooper mask has sometimes been removed or censored because of copyright concerns involving the "Star Wars" design.
  • The video premiered on MTV's "120 Minutes" on January 30, 1994, and later received a nomination at the 1994 Billboard Music Video Awards.
  • Characters and visual ideas from the video were revisited in Beck's 2014 video for "Heart Is a Drum," which incorporates related imagery, including the grim reaper and the white-suited version of Beck.

Lyrics

In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey
butane in my veins so i'm out tocut the junkie
with the plastic eyeballs
spray paint the vegetables
dog food stalls with the beefcake pantyhose
kill the headlights and putit in neutral
stock car flamin' with a loser and the cruise control
baby's in Reno with the vitamin D
got a couple of couches sleep on thelove seat
someone keeps sayin' I'm insane to complain about
a shotgunwedding and a stain on my shirt
don't believe everything that you breathe
you get a parking violation and a maggot on your sleeve
so shave yourface with some mace in the dark
