Synopsis

Annie Lennox performs inside a strange, dreamlike circus populated by carnival performers and a white horse. She appears alternately on a swing, seated in a chair, and at the center of the ring, singing with a distant, mournful intensity. The staging shifts between theatrical spectacle and uneasy stillness, giving the video a surreal atmosphere that mirrors the song's melancholy. Rather than illustrating the lyrics literally, the clip turns Lennox's performance into an eccentric circus tableau filled with faded glamour and unsettling imagery.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Lennox recorded the song for her 1995 album *Medusa*, a collection built largely around interpretations of songs by other artists. Her version is a cover of Procol Harum's 1967 classic.
  • "A Whiter Shade of Pale" was issued as the second single from *Medusa* in May 1995. It reached No. 16 on the UK Singles Chart and remained on the chart for seven weeks.
  • The album version runs 5:16, while the single version was edited to 4:49.
  • The video was circulated in at least two different promotional versions in the United States.
  • Lennox's recording was also used over the closing credits of Irwin Winkler's 1995 film *The Net*.
  • The song's unusual circus setting connects visually with the lyrics' references to dancing, spectators, theatrical movement, and an atmosphere of disorientation.

Lyrics

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kind of seasick
The crowd called out for more
And the room was hummin' harder
As the ceiling flew away
And when we called outfor another drink
But the waiter brought a tray

And so it was later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale.
