Synopsis

The video is a performance-led portrait of the Steve Miller Band delivering "The Joker." Steve Miller takes the visual and musical center, while the group plays through the song's relaxed blues-rock groove in a period setting. There is no elaborate storyline; the clip lets the musicians, the easygoing arrangement, and Miller's playful persona carry the presentation. Its straightforward approach suits a song built around memorable phrases, a distinctive guitar sound, and a deliberately loose, good-time atmosphere.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The clip is an archival promotional video from the song's original 1973 era. It was newly remastered and released online in November 2019 as part of the promotion for *Welcome to the Vault*.
  • "The Joker" was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles during the sessions for the 1973 album of the same name. Steve Miller later said that the album was completed extremely quickly, with the basic tracks recorded in only a few days.
  • The song's character is assembled from identities used in earlier Steve Miller Band material. "Space Cowboy" appeared on *Brave New World*, while "The Gangster Is Back" followed the band's earlier "Gangster of Love."
  • "Pompatus" was not an established word when Miller used it in the lyric. The phrase grew out of his mishearing a word in the 1950s R&B recording "The Letter" by the Medallions.
  • The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1974. It later returned to the top of the UK chart in 1990 after being used in a Levi's television commercial.
  • Miller described the recording as a song he initially considered unusual rather than an obvious hit. Its laid-back structure, slide guitar, vocal harmonies, and memorable chorus ultimately helped make it the band's commercial breakthrough.
