Synopsis

On his sixteenth birthday, Suggs plays an awkward teenager visiting a chemist's shop in search of party supplies. His carefully disguised requests are repeatedly misunderstood, turning a simple errand into a comic exercise in embarrassment. Around him, Madness appear as eccentric performers, including a troupe of gowned, sunglass-wearing "pepperpots." The action moves from the shop to a barber's and finally to the Pleasure Beach, where the band performs on a roller coaster as the song's fairground atmosphere reaches its dizzying conclusion.

Factoids & Trivia

  • A substantial portion of the video was filmed at the Pleasure Beach in Great Yarmouth, including scenes on the roller coaster. The fairground material was shot on March 7, 1982.
  • The shop scenes use the song's double meanings without showing the request directly, matching Madness' preference for broad comedy and visual misdirection.
  • The band members dressed as comic "pepperpots" were presented as performers associated with the attraction's Fun House.
  • "House of Fun" was released as a one-off single in May 1982 and became Madness' only UK No. 1 single.
  • Around 70,000 copies of the single were issued as picture discs, making it the first Madness single released in that format.
  • Although the single was not released in the United States, MTV aired the video. Its exposure there helped build recognition for Madness before "Our House" became their major American hit in 1983.

Lyrics

"good morning miss"
"can i help you son?"
"sixteen today and up for fun"
"i'm a big boy now or so they say
so if you'll serve me i'll be on my way"

"box of balloons, with the featherlight touch"
"pack of party poppers, that pop in the night"
a toothbrush and hairspray, plastic grin
Mrs Clay on the corner has just walked in

welcome to the house of fun
now i've come of age
