Synopsis

A trench-coated photographer trails Michael Jackson through a shadowy city at night, attempting to capture evidence of the mysterious Billie Jean. Jackson moves through the urban landscape like a figure from a film noir thriller, disappearing whenever the camera seems close to catching him. Storefronts, sidewalks, and hotel rooms become part of the illusion. The defining sequence arrives when Jackson dances across a tiled pavement, causing individual squares to glow beneath his feet as he spins, slides, and lands on his toes.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Billie Jean" was the first short film made for Jackson's *Thriller* album and helped establish the album's ambitious visual identity.
  • MTV initially resisted airing the video, at a time when the channel's programming was dominated by white rock artists. Pressure from Jackson's record company eventually helped get the clip into heavy rotation.
  • The glowing sidewalk was created with specially rigged floor tiles. Because the production was made on a limited budget, not every tile could light up, so Jackson had to hit selected squares during the performance.
  • The video introduced several dance moves and mannerisms that became closely associated with Jackson, including his spins, sharp pauses, and toe-landing pose.
  • The photographer character gives the short film a noir atmosphere, while the flashing camera and dark streets reinforce the song's themes of suspicion, secrecy, and public scrutiny.
  • Jackson's performance was so intense that crew members reportedly applauded after filming one of his dance takes.
  • The short film became the first video by a Black artist to receive heavy rotation on MTV, marking a major shift in the channel's programming and influence.
  • In 1992, "Billie Jean" was inducted into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame.

Lyrics

[1st Verse]
She Was More Like A Beauty Queen From A Movie Scene
I Said Don't Mind, But What Do You Mean I Am The One
Who Will Dance On The Floor In The Round
She Said I Am The One Who Will Dance On The Floor In The Round

[2nd Verse]
She Told Me Her Name Was Billie Jean, As She Caused A Scene
Then Every Head Turned With Eyes That Dreamed Of Being The One
Who Will Dance On The Floor In The Round

[Bridge]
People Always Told Me Be Careful Of What You Do
And Don't Go Around Breaking Young Girls' Hearts
