Synopsis

Heaven 17 move through a strangely deserted London, filmed mostly in stark black and white. The members approach an abandoned red telephone box, where a receiver hangs off the hook and the speaking clock repeats into the empty street. Loose banknotes, a discarded newspaper and vacant urban spaces add to the unsettling atmosphere. A brief shift into color introduces a ghostly crowd, before the video returns to the silent city and ends on the endlessly swinging telephone receiver.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The London locations include Lothbury and Marylebone station. The station filming took place at night after it had closed to passenger services.
  • Behind-the-scenes footage from the station shoot appeared on the BBC arts program "Riverside" on November 29, 1982.
  • The newspaper seen early in the video carries a headline about the British Electric Foundation crashing. This appears to be an in-joke connected to B.E.F., the project from which Heaven 17 developed.
  • The video is primarily monochrome, with the short color sequence involving the crowd providing its most striking visual contrast.
  • "Let Me Go" was released in October 1982 and narrowly missed the UK Top 40. The band has since identified it as one of its favorite songs.

Lyrics

Once there was a day
We were together all the way
An endless path unbroken
But now there is a time
A torture less sublime
Our souls are locked and frozen

Once we were years ahead but now those thoughts are dead
Let me go
All hopeless fantasies are making fools of me
Let me go
I walk alone and yet I never say goodbye
Let me go
