Synopsis

Napalm Death perform amid a disturbing montage built around the cycle of life and death. Images associated with conception and birth are placed alongside scenes of sudden violence, destruction, burned bodies, and a person leaping from a high-rise building. The video's rapid, confrontational editing turns the song into a bleak meditation on humanity's capacity for creation and annihilation. Rather than offering a conventional narrative, it collides intimate biological imagery with shocking documentary-style footage, creating an intentionally abrasive visual counterpart to the band's extreme sound.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was released in 1997 alongside the "Breed to Breathe" EP, whose enhanced CD edition included the clip as a multimedia data track.
  • Its use of graphic footage led to the clip being banned in Germany. Authorities reportedly considered scenes involving burned bodies and a fatal fall too disturbing for an ordinary age rating and deemed the material illegal.
  • Earache later left the controversial footage intact rather than cutting the video down. As a result, the clip was omitted from the German edition of Napalm Death's 2001 DVD, while an uncensored version appeared in other editions.
  • The visual concept was built around the contrast between birth and death. Conception footage is repeatedly set against images of violent or sudden mortality, echoing the song's title and its preoccupation with the destructive side of human existence.
  • The clip's notoriety was amplified by its original format. Before online video became commonplace, it was primarily encountered through the EP's CD-ROM content and specialist metal releases, making the banned footage something of an underground curiosity.

Lyrics

Divorced humanity
Science strays
Walk the path of servitude
Grown unknown malignant code
Misconceived the passion whole
Misconceived the passion whole
Born against the innocent
Amongst us issues preset
Determined goals which are set
Love: a crime of severance
Are we free to feel?
Do we hurt to heal?
Whose life to steal?
