Synopsis

The Beastie Boys become a trio of flamboyant undercover detectives in a deliberately over-the-top parody of 1970s cop shows. Wearing wigs, mustaches, suits, and aviator shades, their characters race through Los Angeles, conduct surveillance, chase suspects, and stumble through a melodramatic crime story. Freeze-frame introductions, fake episode titles, mock credits, clumsy action, and rapid-fire editing turn the group's hard-driving performance into a gleefully chaotic television pastiche. The video treats every police-show cliche with exaggerated seriousness, making the silliness part of its appeal.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video's concept grew out of an earlier photo shoot in which the group posed as undercover cops in ties, fake mustaches, and wigs. The shoot was inspired by Adam Horovitz's long-standing idea for a stakeout-themed portrait session.

• The production was intentionally small and mobile. The crew reportedly worked out of a van, moved around Los Angeles without permits, and improvised much of the shoot instead of using a conventional large-scale music-video setup.

• The band handled the driving themselves for the chase footage. They bought a car that was close to the end of its life and used it for the video's reckless-looking action sequences.

• Two rented cameras were damaged during filming: one was ruined when a makeshift plastic-bag covering leaked during an underwater shot, while another fell from a van. The accidents reportedly caused the budget to rise to roughly three times its original amount.

• The video became a major influence beyond music television. Danny Boyle cited its energy as an inspiration for the opening sequence of the 1996 film "Trainspotting."

• "Sabotage" received five nominations at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards but won none. Adam Yauch later appeared onstage in character to protest the result, turning the awards ceremony into an extension of the group's comic mythology.
