Synopsis

Mariah Carey enters a sleek, futuristic version of Japan, where crowded streets, neon-lit spaces and comic-book action surround her search for romance. Her alter ego, Bianca Storm, appears as a stylish, larger-than-life figure caught in a sci-fi chase involving cars, security forces and a rooftop sword fight. Cam'ron joins the fantasy in his own performance sequences, adding a hip-hop edge to the glossy pop world. The video closes by transforming Carey and Cam'ron into animated characters, completing its playful anime-inspired vision.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was originally conceived for "The One," which had been selected as the second single from Charmbracelet. The song was changed to "Boy (I Need You)" partway through production, forcing the existing concept to be reworked around Cam'ron's appearance.

• The opening footage was shot in Japan, while the rest of the production took place in Los Angeles in December 2002. The Los Angeles production reportedly used Japanese performers and extras to maintain the visual continuity.

• The visual concept drew on Speed Racer and Godzilla, while also incorporating retro-futurist ideas associated with 2001: A Space Odyssey and THX 1138.

• One of the largest setups was a nighttime sword fight filmed on the roof of Los Angeles' Aon building, 63 stories above the city.

• The video combines live action with an anime-style finale showing Carey and Cam'ron as animated characters.
