Synopsis
The video presents "The Wire" as a stylized performance piece rather than a literal storyline. David Dallas appears within a stark, surreal visual environment while the imagery shifts around him in time with the track's uneasy, upward-driving mood. The presentation reflects the song's focus on ambition, personal change, and the precarious feeling of trying to stay balanced while moving higher. Ruby Frost's haunting vocal contribution reinforces the track's introspective and atmospheric tone.
Factoids & Trivia
- "The Wire" was released as the second official single from David Dallas' third solo album, "Falling Into Place," in December 2013.
- Ruby Frost originally sent Dallas a demo of the song built around her vocal and a programmed piano part. Dallas was unsure how to approach it as a rap song, so the idea was passed to Fire & Ice for further development.
- Fire & Ice produced the finished track, giving it a restrained, atmospheric sound with hip-hop, trip-hop, and synth-pop elements.
- The song was one of two collaborations between Dallas and Frost on "Falling Into Place." Their other collaboration, "The Gate," closes the album.
- "The Wire" reached No. 11 on the New Zealand Singles Chart and was certified Gold in New Zealand.
- A P-Money remix followed in February 2014, recasting the song in a more overtly trip-hop direction.
