Synopsis

Bob Hoskins plays a weary older man walking along the River Thames with a bouquet of flowers. He lip-syncs Jamie T's rapid, mournful narration while moving through a dim London landscape, his expression shifting between anger, confusion and grief. The reason for his journey remains unclear until he reaches a riverside memorial. There, he places the flowers beside a note addressed to Sheila, revealing that the song's tragic story is personal: he is remembering his dead daughter.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The 2007 video is notable for featuring Bob Hoskins instead of Jamie T. Hoskins lip-syncs the song, giving the performance the feel of a short dramatic monologue rather than a conventional artist promo.
  • "Sheila" had an earlier video released in 2006. That version used trained baboons in a suburban apartment, with brief appearances by Jamie T. The Hoskins version was made for the song's later 2007 campaign.
  • The riverside setting connects the video's visual narrative to the song's London locations and its reference to Sheila drowning in the Thames.
  • The video with Hoskins became the version most closely associated with the song, helped by the actor's instantly recognizable presence and the final revelation that the bouquet is being taken to Sheila's memorial.
  • Hoskins was not simply appearing as himself: the video uses his established dramatic persona and restrained facial acting to turn Jamie T's densely written lyrics into a largely wordless story of bereavement.
