Synopsis
Faithless' "Music Matters" uses a glowing, hand-drawn animation to turn the song's tribute to music into a constantly shifting visual collage. Faces, skull-like figures, crowds, and strange animal forms emerge and dissolve against a dark background, moving with the track's hypnotic pulse. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video creates an impression of memory, imagination, and creative influence, reflecting Maxi Jazz's recollections of the artists and broadcasts that shaped him.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was made without the participation of Faithless, who were unavailable for a shoot. The production therefore relied entirely on animation rather than band performance footage.
- Animation was created at Mikros Image Lab in Paris, with production handled by Paranoid US and Columbia Records serving as the label.
- The complete video was produced in just seven days and five nights, an unusually compressed schedule for an animated music video.
- The label's brief was essentially to make the video "cool," leaving the creative team considerable freedom to develop its abstract, neon-like visual language.
- The animation was produced using Adobe After Effects.
- "Music Matters" appears on Faithless' fifth studio album, *To All New Arrivals*, released on November 27, 2006. The album's title tagline is taken from the song's opening lines.
- The album version features singer Cass Fox, while the track was written by Maxi Jazz, Rollo Armstrong, Sister Bliss, and Fox.
- The video was released in 2007 and was also included with the US deluxe digital edition of *To All New Arrivals*.
