Synopsis

Mariah Carey leaves an unfaithful lover behind in a glamorous, ever-changing journey through a mansion, a stylized urban street, a car ride, a football stadium, and a beach at sunset. She delivers a series of recorded messages announcing that the relationship is over while moving from scene to scene in increasingly confident outfits. Cameos from Jermaine Dupri, Chris Tucker, and Da Brat add star power, and the video closes with Carey performing beneath a giant illuminated "MIMI" sign before walking toward the ocean.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was designed around the idea of one continuous moving shot. The camera travels between sets and locations while Carey changes costumes and shifts from one scenario to the next. The production reportedly filmed roughly ten takes to perfect the complicated choreography and camera movement.
  • Carey wore extremely high heels for several scenes. Reports from the shoot said that the shoes caused considerable pain, and crew members carried her between parts of the set so she would not have to walk in them.
  • The video's cameos include producer Jermaine Dupri on the street, actor Chris Tucker in the car, and rapper Da Brat at the football stadium. Carey's cat Willy D also appears briefly after the bathtub sequence.
  • Several signs in the constructed street scene contain personal references and inside jokes, including "Jack's Cafe," named after Carey's dog, and "So So Fetch," which combines a nod to Dupri's So So Def label with a reference to the movie "Mean Girls."
  • The video premiered on BET's "Access Granted" on July 27, 2005. It also received an online premiere through Yahoo! Music, following the strong online response to Carey's earlier "We Belong Together" video.
  • The illuminated "MIMI" sign connects the video to the identity Carey adopted for the album "The Emancipation of Mimi." The sign also became a recurring visual associated with the album's 2005 campaign.

Lyrics

[Chorus]
I gotta shake it off
Cause the loving ain't the same
And you keep on playing games
Like you know I'm here to stay
I gotta shake it off
Just like the Calgon commercial life
I really gotta get up outta here
And go somewhere
I gotta shake it off
Gotta make that move
Find somebody who
Appreciates all the love I give
