Synopsis

A jazz ensemble performs Skalpel's moody instrumental as a live accompaniment to F.W. Murnau's silent horror classic "Nosferatu." The musicians appear absorbed in the screening, turning the clip into a stylized reconstruction of an old cinema performance rather than a conventional band video. Flickering black-and-white imagery, period atmosphere, and the contrast between the archaic film and the modern, sample-based score give "Sculpture" an eerie, dreamlike character. The result presents Skalpel's music as both a soundtrack and a staged audiovisual illusion.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Sculpture" was Skalpel's first music video and was made around 2000, several years before the track appeared on the duo's 2003 EP of the same name.
  • The video was built around the idea of a jazz band playing live to "Nosferatu," giving the electronic duo a deliberately human and cinematic presentation.
  • The concept created a remarkably convincing illusion. Some concertgoers expected an actual jazz ensemble to appear onstage because they had seen the musicians performing in the video.
  • At the time, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudlo were working primarily as DJs. They did not yet have the technical setup to perform the material live from computers, so the audiovisual approach also solved a practical performance problem.
  • The clip helped establish Skalpel's interest in combining their Polish jazz-based sampling with film imagery and visual performance.
  • "Sculpture" was later included in Ninja Tune's video collection associated with the Zen TV project, extending its reach beyond the duo's early club and DJ-set audience.
