Synopsis

The Avalanches' "Frontier Psychiatrist" unfolds like a deranged stage revue built from the song's sampled fragments. A succession of performers, musicians, animals, props, and peculiar characters embody individual sounds: a ghostly chorus, western figures, string players, drummers, a parrot, and other improbable attractions. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video turns the track's collage structure into a chaotic live spectacle, with each new sample introducing another visual surprise. The result is a surreal performance that feels deliberately assembled, absurd, and strangely coherent.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was conceived as a visual translation of the track's sample-heavy construction. The Avalanches described the idea as bringing the song's many recorded elements to life on a soundstage, rather than simply showing the group performing.

• The song itself began accidentally while Robbie Chater and Darren Seltmann were experimenting with sounds. A Wayne and Shuster comedy sketch about a man and his horse supplied the central spoken material, while an Enoch Light recording provided the dramatic western-flavored musical bed.

• The production team had to create or locate sounds in the pre-YouTube era. Chater recalled hiring old western movies on VHS when they needed horse noises for the recording, an approach that mirrors the video's deliberately tactile, handmade feel.

• An alternate video was also produced. It takes a more literal approach to the dialogue, using scenes such as a psychiatrist's office and a bedroom, with animated Rorschach-style ink blots responding to different samples.

• The video finished as runner-up in the Best Music Video category at the 2002 Rushes Soho Shorts Film Festival.

• Pitchfork later placed it at No. 19 on its list of the Top 50 Music Videos of the 2000s, helping establish the clip as one of the era's defining examples of surreal, sample-driven music-video design.
