Synopsis

Inside the towering headquarters of Feel Good Inc., 2-D is trapped in a joyless world of screens, noise, and passive spectators. He looks toward Noodle's floating windmill island, a bright symbol of freedom drifting beyond the corporation's reach. As helicopters patrol the island, De La Soul's giant televised images taunt the band and push 2-D toward a manic breakdown. His brief resistance collapses, and the video ends by returning him to the same numb state, repeating "feel good" as if trying to convince himself.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in February 2005 and accompanied the lead single from Gorillaz' second album, Demon Days.
  • Its central ideas are intellectual freedom and the media's dumbing down of mass culture. The tower and its exhausted occupants contrast with Noodle's open, wind-powered island.
  • Jamie Hewlett cited Hayao Miyazaki as an influence on parts of the visual design. The floating windmill landmass is often compared with Laputa, the airborne island in Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky.
  • The opening includes a brief sample from "A Fistful of Peanuts," the Spacemonkeyz dub of Gorillaz' earlier song "Clint Eastwood."
  • The video forms a loose continuation with "El Manana," which returns to Noodle's floating island as helicopters close in on it.
  • "Feel Good Inc." won Breakthrough Video and Best Special Effects in a Video at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards.
  • At the 48th Annual Grammy Awards in 2006, the song won Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. The video was also nominated for Best Music Video.
  • The official Gorillaz channel uploaded a commentary edition on April 26, 2022, featuring commentary from the fictional band member Murdoc Niccals.

Lyrics

City's breaking down on a camel's back.
They just have to go 'cos they dont hold back
So all you fill the streets it's appealing to see
You wont get out the county, 'cos you're bad and free
You've got a new horizon It's ephemeral style.
A melancholy town where we never smile.
And all I wanna hear is the message beep.
My dreams, they've got to kiss, because I dont get sleep, no..

Windmill, Windmill for the land.
Learn forever hand in hand
Take it all in on your stride
It is sticking, falling down
