Synopsis

Coldplay perform "In My Place" inside a vast, nearly empty white room washed in cool blue light. Will Champion begins alone at the drums before the rest of the band joins in, while Chris Martin starts seated apart from the group and later moves into the performance. Martin sings directly to the camera throughout, occasionally breaking away during the guitar solo to approach two women sitting in the distant background before returning to the band.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video premiered on June 17, 2002, several weeks before "In My Place" was released as the lead single from *A Rush of Blood to the Head* on August 5, 2002.
  • Filming took place in the recently decommissioned Saatchi Gallery. The gallery's scale provides much of the video's visual character, making the band appear isolated within an unusually large performance space.
  • The two women sitting on the step were not actors. They were members of the production crew: the stylist or makeup artist and the record label's video commissioner.
  • The women were initially sitting there while the band was setting up. They were kept in the frame to emphasize the size of the room.
  • The restrained staging and limited color palette reflect the more direct, performance-centered visual style associated with Coldplay's early-2000s work.
  • The video was remastered in 2022, alongside other videos connected with the 20th anniversary of *A Rush of Blood to the Head*.
  • The clip later received a spoof from Bad Lip Reading, giving the relatively simple performance video a second life in online pop-culture circulation.
