Synopsis

Set in a vividly stylized Parisian cabaret, the video presents Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink as glamorous performers of the Moulin Rouge. Missy Elliott introduces the spectacle before each woman takes a spotlighted turn, surrounded by saturated red lighting, elaborate lingerie-inspired costumes, theatrical props, and tightly choreographed routines. The singers eventually unite onstage for the song's climactic vocal exchanges, blending pop, R&B, rap, and old-world cabaret imagery into a flamboyant promotional tie-in for the film Moulin Rouge!

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in Los Angeles in March 2001 on specially built sets designed to evoke the Moulin Rouge nightclub around the turn of the 20th century.
  • Some of the production's visual language deliberately combines period French cabaret with contemporary hip-hop styling. Props and costume elements connected to the film were also used to strengthen the visual link with Moulin Rouge.
  • Choreographer Tina Landon gave each performer a signature prop. Pink worked with a chair, Lil' Kim was paired with cash and a chaise lounge, Mya handled a whip, and Aguilera wore long satin gloves that she removed during the song's crescendo.
  • Missy Elliott is not one of the four credited lead artists, but her spoken introduction and brief appearances make her an important part of the video's framing.
  • The clip helped turn a soundtrack single into one of the defining pop-culture images of 2001. At the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, "Lady Marmalade" won Video of the Year and Best Video from a Film.
  • The collaboration also won Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 44th Grammy Awards in 2002, extending the song's success beyond its role in the Moulin Rouge soundtrack.

Lyrics

[Lil’ kim:]
Where’s all mah soul sistas
Lemme hear ya’ll flow sistas

[Mya:]
Hey sista, go sista, soul sista, flow sista
Hey sista, go sista, soul sista, go sista

[Mya:]
He met Marmalade down IN old Moulin Rouge
Struttin’ her stuff on the street
