Synopsis

A frenetic collage of lo-fi footage, visual glitches, surreal interruptions and tightly edited performance fragments turns the search for "the one" into a barrage of possible answers. The video moves between an unruly night out, distorted images and a black-and-white gig sequence where a couple trade sarcastic subtitles about the band. Rather than presenting a conventional romance, it mirrors the song's uncertainty through abrupt changes in style, texture and perspective, making attraction feel exciting, funny and slightly chaotic.

• "Are You The One?" was released in 2005 as the lead single from The Presets' debut album, "Beams."

• The video received a nomination for Best Video at the 2006 ARIA Music Awards.

• The treatment was the first music-video treatment Kris Moyes had written. He was competing against more established directors, and his brother Kim Moyes encouraged him to make the proposal as ambitious as possible.

• Moyes later described the finished clip as an accumulation of visual ideas he had collected over several years, which accounts for its deliberately overloaded, almost explosive style.

• One of the video's signature effects came from interrupting the transfer of DivX video files between a PC and a Mac. The resulting digital artifacts became a recognizable part of the clip's identity and inspired homage videos.

• The black-and-white gig sequence includes deliberately unflattering subtitles in which the audience members complain about the music, only to dismiss The Presets as well. The joke undercuts the usual promotional purpose of a music video.
