Synopsis
Two young women leave the familiar world of crowds and city lights behind, heading toward an imagined escape by the sea. Their journey unfolds through bonfires, cigarette smoke, books, open landscapes, and dreamlike fragments of movement. Rather than presenting a straightforward narrative, the video shifts between stillness and motion, making the women and their surroundings appear to ripple, split, and transform. The result is a hazy portrait of friendship, rebellion, and freedom that mirrors the song's longing to get away.
Factoids & Trivia
- "To The Sea" was released as part of Mint Julep's 2011 album "Save Your Season" and later appeared as a single with an Ulrich Schnauss remix.
- Mint Julep is the husband-and-wife duo Keith and Hollie Kenniff. Keith Kenniff also records solo material as Helios and Goldmund.
- The video was made as a follow-up to the duo's "Aviary" video. Both clips were created by the Berlin-based directing team A Nice Idea Every Day.
- Its signature visual effect was produced by mounting two cameras together and rapidly switching between their slightly different viewpoints. The technique creates a shifting, pseudo-3D image without requiring conventional 3D glasses.
- The production team described this approach as a "3D camera shift." It became a recurring visual signature in A Nice Idea Every Day's work.
- Contemporary coverage singled out the clip's combination of stereoscopic imagery, morphing photographs, and unusually fluid motion, giving it a deliberately disorienting, almost seasick quality.
- The four-minute video was later selected for music video and experimental 3D programs at European film festivals, including Crossing Europe in Linz.
