Wiki

Synopsis

A hulking blue, horned creature wanders through the drab streets of an anonymous Australian town, carrying the weight of a lonely, frustrated existence. He smokes, works a dead-end job in a Vietnamese restaurant, and struggles to connect with the people around him. Rather than singing conventionally, the beast performs the lyrics in Auslan, turning the song's inward-looking mood into a physical gesture. As his isolation and anger build, the ordinary surroundings become increasingly unstable, leading to a cathartic outburst.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The creature was conceived as a chain-smoking blue monster working in a Vietnamese restaurant, with the visual idea developed by the Oh Yeah Wow team.
  • The monster signs the song's lyrics in Auslan, the language of the Australian Deaf community. Darcy Prendergast learned the choreography over three months before filming.
  • Prendergast also performed inside the suit. The shoot reportedly lasted 26 hours during a Melbourne summer day when temperatures reached around 40 degrees Celsius.
  • Russell Sharp of Sharp FX created the creature's prosthetic makeup and suit. Sharp FX's film work includes effects associated with productions such as "The Hobbit."
  • The production used a practical monster costume rather than presenting the character primarily through digital effects. The suit was later returned to Sharp FX.
  • The final scene came with a real injury: Prendergast fractured his hand while punching through the back of the bookcase used in the climax.
  • The video was nominated for Australian Video of the Year at the 2014 J Awards, alongside clips by Sia, Chet Faker, Illy, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, and Client Liaison.
  • "Frameless" was included in the Music Video Competition at SXSW in 2015.
  • The song appeared on Hudson and Troop's 2014 "Frameless" single and was later broadcast by ABC's "Rage."
