Synopsis

An experimental animated sequence transforms Marilou's erotic world into a fluid series of recurring gestures, bodies, shadows and dreamlike images. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video moves between physical reality and fantasy, using repetition and gradual visual changes to echo the song's looping language. Marilou appears as both a tangible presence and an imagined object of desire, while the imagery shifts between sensuality, abstraction and unease. The result is a hypnotic visual interpretation of Bashung's performance and Gainsbourg's provocative portrait of solitary pleasure.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video runs for roughly nine minutes, making it closer in form to an animated short film than a conventional music video.

• It was produced by ChezEddy for Barclay and released in 2011 to accompany Alain Bashung's posthumous recording of Serge Gainsbourg's "Variations sur Marilou."

• The visual structure deliberately mirrors the song's repeated phrases. Extended shots return to similar actions and compositions, with small changes creating the sensation of variations rather than forward-moving plot.

• The production used 74 animated shots. They were handled like the shots of a live-action music video and passed to the editor individually.

• The project was assembled without a complete rough cut or a precise preview of the final edit. This helped preserve a spontaneous quality and allowed the transitions to develop through the animation process.

• Its imagery moves between reality and fantasy, presenting Marilou's gestures alongside the narrator's imagined world of desire. The approach keeps the erotic subject matter suggestive and symbolic rather than explicit.

• Alain Bashung recorded his version of the complete *L'Homme a tete de chou* project in 2006. The recordings were originally connected to a stage work based on Gainsbourg's album by choreographer Jean-Claude Gallotta.

• Bashung was expected to present the project onstage in 2009, but his death in March of that year meant that the planned performance never took place. The album and video therefore appeared after his death.

• The animation team included Antoine Ettori, Emmanuelle Walker, Matthieu Gaillard, Vincent Verniers and Gaetan Louet. Editing was credited to Manuel Coutant and Olivier Guedj.
