Synopsis
Three teenage girls leave the countryside and head toward the outskirts of Berlin, where an ordinary day gradually takes on a restless, mischievous energy. They wander through residential spaces, balconies, elevators, roads, and open areas, appearing both bored and exhilarated as they create small disturbances along the way. The video's dreamy colors and unstable visual movement give their journey a detached, almost surreal quality, turning youthful ennui into a strange and playful urban adventure.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video uses a "camera shift" technique developed by A Nice Idea Every Day. Two cameras filmed the same focal point from slightly different angles, and the images were alternated during editing to create a homemade 3D effect without glasses.
- Because the performers and cameras were often moving, the post-production process required the focal point to be tracked from frame to frame.
- Filming took place mainly around the Markisches Viertel area in northern Berlin. The production team made repeated scouting trips because renovation work had changed or removed several locations previously identified through Google Maps.
- The crew reportedly took numerous elevator rides while searching for a balcony with the right appearance and perspective.
- "Aviary" was released as a free download ahead of Mint Julep's 2011 album "Save Your Season."
- Mint Julep is the husband-and-wife project of Keith and Hollie Kenniff. Keith Kenniff is also known for his work under the names Helios and Goldmund.
- A Mogwai remix of "Aviary" was announced around the video's release, extending the track's connection to the atmospheric and post-rock scenes.
