Synopsis
Battles and Matias Aguayo perform amid a rapidly shifting collage of surreal images. The video moves from bright outdoor scenes and oversized ice cream imagery to fruit, sticky textures, martial-arts gestures, bodily close-ups and deliberately unsettling tableaux. Rather than presenting a conventional narrative, it treats the song as a sensory experience, using abrupt edits, saturated colors and absurd visual juxtapositions to suggest the taste, mess and physical pleasure of ice cream without focusing on the dessert itself.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video premiered on May 9, 2011, ahead of the release of Battles' album "Gloss Drop" and the "Ice Cream" single.
- The production concept was based on making the video look like ice cream without simply showing ice cream throughout. The filmmakers interpreted the track through milky textures, fruit, sweetness and mess.
- The video was organized into separate visual chapters. Its apparently random sequence of images was carefully structured rather than assembled as an entirely improvised montage.
- The production team cited the chaotic, sticky performance art of Otto Muehl as an influence, while deliberately giving the imagery a playful and cheerful tone.
- One early idea involved showing a woman in a bathtub with ice cream at the beginning and end. The concept changed after the art department supplied a giant strawberry ice cream cone, which became part of the outdoor imagery.
- The clip drew comparisons with El Guincho's "Bombay," another visually extravagant production associated with the Barcelona-based CANADA collective.
- Its provocative imagery led several outlets to label the video NSFW.
- The cinematography was nominated in the Best Cinematography in a Video category at the 2011 UK Music Video Awards.
