Synopsis

Two straight-faced performers, Orlando Higginbottom and Luisa Gerstein, appear separately in a stark studio space while trading lines from the song's dreamy duet. Wearing eccentric handmade hats and headpieces, they shuffle, pose and move through shifting washes of rainbow-colored light. Bubbles drift through the frame and water falls around them, creating a playful, surreal atmosphere. Although their vocals suggest an exchange between two longing lovers, the pair never acknowledges or even directly meets the other, leaving the song's questions unresolved as the video fades out.

Factoids & Trivia

• The original video was made for the 2010 release of "Garden" on Greco-Roman's *All in Two Sixty Dancehalls* EP.

• Luisa Gerstein, then associated with Lulu and the Lampshades, provides the female vocal in the duet. Orlando Higginbottom sings the other part.

• Lily Smith later said she directed and produced the video for approximately GBP 200. She also described it as her most-viewed music video, with around 2.9 million YouTube views at the time of her interview.

• The video's deliberately low-budget look turns simple elements - colored lighting, bubbles, falling water and homemade headgear - into its main visual language.

• The two performers were filmed as if they were having a conversation, but they remain isolated from one another. This mirrors the song's back-and-forth lyrics and its lack of emotional resolution.

• A separate video was made in 2011 for the remix campaign. That later promo used a psychedelic, low-fi approach and was designed to exist alongside the original rather than replace it.

• "Garden" was later reissued as a single through Polydor and appeared on Higginbottom's 2012 debut album, *Trouble*.

• Nokia used the song in advertising for its first-generation Lumia smartphones between 2011 and 2012.
