Synopsis

In a strange woodland setting, a couple and their young daughter prepare for what appears to be a child's birthday celebration inside an elevated treehouse. While the adults bake a cake, the girl wanders into the surrounding woods. Guests arrive carrying gifts made from dirt and wood, gradually revealing that the event is actually a birthday party for a dog. Separated from the festivities, the girl quietly takes in the surreal scene, including an imposing bull that seems to watch over the forest.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The official video was released on June 17, 2013, ahead of San Fermin's self-titled debut album, which arrived through Downtown Records on September 17 of that year.
  • The video's central reversal turns an apparently ordinary children's birthday into an unsettling celebration for a dog. The gifts of dirt and wood give the party an earthy, almost ritualistic quality.
  • The song was the first single from the self-titled album. The record was written by Ellis Ludwig-Leone as a 17-song narrative exploring the relationship between two fictional characters.
  • "Sonsick" features layered vocals from Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, whose harmonies provide much of the song's bright, theatrical lift.
  • The video was presented in 2013 as a family drama, but its surreal details - particularly the treehouse, the forest setting, and the giant bull - push it toward the atmosphere of a modern fable.
