Gotye - Easy Way Out

Wiki

Synopsis

Gotye is trapped in a repetitive daily routine inside a small, constantly rotating house. He moves from room to room through familiar actions, but the environment gradually becomes stranger and more threatening. Small disturbances accumulate as the cycle continues: objects shift, animals appear, food spills, and the house begins to fall apart. The seemingly ordinary routine turns into a claustrophobic nightmare, visually echoing the song's themes of boredom, emotional exhaustion, and the desire to escape.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video combines live action, stop motion, practical effects, and visual-effects compositing, with the production designed to keep as much of the animation as possible in camera.
  • The crew constructed a five-room miniature house inside their studio. The camera moved through the set on a motion-control rig, completing a 360-degree rotation roughly every 30 seconds.
  • Production lasted about nine months. The set remained in the studio for the entire period, allowing the team to build, furnish, animate, and repeatedly adjust the interconnected rooms.
  • More than 10,000 sheets of paper were used for the office set. The production also included handmade models, animated plasticine effects, practical smoke, flames, and a moving cat.
  • The crew used the set as a working living space during production. They reportedly ate lunch, napped, and even used the bed while working on the clip.
  • For the final camera pass, the completed set was burned with a flamethrower, turning the house's destruction into both a practical effect and a fitting end to the production.
  • The video was released on February 24, 2012, as part of the promotional campaign for Gotye's album "Making Mirrors."
  • "Easy Way Out" won Best Music Video at the 2013 Byron Bay International Film Festival.
