Wiki

Synopsis

In a stark, anonymous suburb, two women and a man move through a tense series of encounters marked by rigid stares, sudden embraces and an uneasy sense of control. A tennis court, isolated tents and a physical connection between the characters create the feeling of an unexplained ritual or power struggle. The imagery periodically breaks into surreal, animated X-ray-like graphics before reaching a disturbing climax involving fire. The video favors mood and suggestion over a literal narrative, matching the track's haunted, elastic electronic atmosphere.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Pencil Pimp" was released as the first single from Sepalcure's self-titled debut album, issued by Hotflush Recordings in November 2011.
  • Sepalcure was the collaboration between Praveen Sharma, who also recorded as Braille, and Travis Stewart, better known as Machinedrum.
  • The video's official credits list Martin Edelsteen as director of photography, Ulrika Westergren for production design, Sougwen Chung as art director, and Cato Lauvli for visual effects.
  • Sougwen Chung was closely connected to Sepalcure's visual identity. She was also Sharma's girlfriend at the time and handled the duo's visuals, according to a contemporary album profile.
  • The cast consists of Emir Mulaosmanovic, Guro Boe Linnet and Kari Skotnes Vikjord.
  • Contemporary coverage described the film as an unsettling micro-drama set in a faceless suburb, emphasizing its ambiguous power dynamics rather than offering a clear explanation of the events.
  • The video's animated imagery and X-ray-like passages extend the track's combination of physical percussion, warm bass and ghostly vocal textures into a deliberately uncanny visual language.
  • The single arrived shortly before Sepalcure's audio-visual live show made its U.S. debut at Le Poisson Rouge in New York on November 10, 2011.
