Synopsis

A lonely man doing laundry finds himself pulled into a surreal, gravity-defying world. The laundromat begins to spin, sending him tumbling through heaps of clothes and into an alternate reality where ordinary spaces become dreamlike and unstable. The story then shifts to a girl on a swing, whose own surroundings turn upside down as the video's visual logic grows increasingly disorienting. The romantic thread suggested by the song becomes an abstract tale of separation, chance encounters, and two people suspended in a world that refuses to stay the right way up.

• "A Tattered Line of String" was one of two new songs added to the 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of *Give Up*, released in 2013. It marked The Postal Service's first new music in approximately a decade.

• The video's central visual device is a camera trick based on the apparent relationship between gravity and camera movement. The production team described it as a classic cinema technique, with Georges Melies cited as an inspiration.
