Synopsis
A bird and a tree form an unlikely friendship in a surreal woodland setting. They spend their days together, dancing, singing, and enjoying each other's company as the tree becomes the bird's stage and companion. Their playful routine is interrupted by a sudden act of destruction that leaves the bird alone and grieving. Combining live action, puppetry, and stop-motion techniques, the video turns the upbeat song into a bittersweet story about companionship, loss, and devotion.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video blends puppetry, stop-motion animation, and live-action photography rather than relying on a single animation style.
- Sebastian Pringle told Culture Brats that he performed the singing tree. Because he was the only band member who knew the lyrics, the production team asked him to play the character.
- Pringle also described an early-morning makeup call in downtown Los Angeles, where he spent time in prosthetics for the tree role.
- The bird was made from a real dead bird specimen, according to a contemporary production account. The production team reportedly found it through Craigslist.
- "You & I" appeared on Crystal Fighters' 2013 album "Cave Rave," whose title also inspired the group's plan for a live rave inside a cave in the Basque countryside.
- A separate acoustic version of the song was filmed in a cave in England. It should not be confused with the narrative video featuring the tree and bird.
