Synopsis

Set in a cold, retro-futurist dystopia, "Mind Control" follows Friends through a world of corporate surveillance, strange machinery, and unsettling transformations. Samantha Urbani and the band appear amid reel-to-reel tapes, glowing countdown displays, oversized cameras, and sharply dressed businessmen. The imagery gradually becomes more surreal, with faces splitting open to reveal new faces and bodies behaving as if controlled by an unseen system. The result is a stylish collision of early-1980s espionage imagery, science-fiction paranoia, and Friends' slinky post-disco energy.

Factoids & Trivia

• "Mind Control" was released as a single from Friends' debut album, "Manifest!", in 2012. It was the third video associated with the album's campaign, following "Friend Crush" and "I'm His Girl."

• Contemporary coverage described the song as drawing on disco, funk, and a Heaven 17-like electronic pop aesthetic. The video mirrors that reference point with its corporate futurism and early-1980s visual language.

• The production uses deliberately cumbersome technology as part of its design: reel-to-reel machines, LED countdown displays, surveillance cameras, and other oversized devices make the future look dated and physical rather than sleek and digital.

• The facial transformations were created with special-effects makeup and visual effects. The production credits list Taylor Tanaka for SFX makeup and Bonnie Brae for visual effects.

• Samantha Urbani receives the most prominent on-screen presence, while the rest of Friends appear throughout. The video also includes a cameo by Etienne Pierre Duguay, formerly the drummer of Real Estate.

• The video was produced by Doomsday Entertainment, with Ryan Kohler as producer, Starr Whitesides handling cinematography, Mandy Brown editing, and Brandon Chavez completing the color work.
