Synopsis
In a futuristic stadium, two rival teams compete in a brutal hybrid sport that combines elements of football, lacrosse, roller derby, motocross, and baseball. Players race across a neon-lit arena, using heavy protective gear, vehicles, and weapons in a frantic battle for possession. As the match intensifies, the action shifts between the athletes, the roaring crowd, and dramatic close-ups of the competitors. The result is a compact sports spectacle with the scale and visual language of a retro science-fiction movie.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed in Barcelona and released in July 2012 to promote "New Lands," the fourth single from Justice's album "Audio, Video, Disco."
- The fictional sport deliberately combines several real-world games, including football, lacrosse, roller derby, motocross, and baseball. Contemporary descriptions compared its tone to the dystopian sports film "Rollerball."
- Red Bull Media House was involved in the production and stunt coordination, helping give the clip its unusually elaborate action sequences.
- The visual concept draws on 1970s science-fiction cinema, Japanese anime, 1980s visual effects, and highly stylized sports movies.
- Post-production was extensive. Glassworks Barcelona handled 202 shots, with significant 2D and 3D work used to build the stadium atmosphere and crowd.
- Because there were not enough extras during filming, many shots of the spectators were created or completed through rotoscoping.
- The production used anamorphic lenses, which made the tracking and compositing work more difficult during post-production.
- The video was published online on July 11, 2012, shortly before the London Olympics, giving its sports-centered concept especially timely exposure.
