The Chemical Brothers are an English electronic music duo consisting of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons. Formed in Manchester in 1992, the pair became leading figures in the 1990s big beat movement, combining breakbeats, samples, psychedelic textures, rock influences and hip-hop energy into music that could function equally well in clubs, on radio and in large concert venues.
Rowlands and Simons met while studying history at the University of Manchester and began DJing together at clubs in London. Initially performing as the Dust Brothers, they developed a sample-heavy sound influenced by artists including Public Enemy, Cabaret Voltaire, My Bloody Valentine and early rave acts. Their first release, the 1993 EP "Song to the Siren," attracted attention within the British club scene. After the American production team known as the Dust Brothers objected to their name, the duo adopted the name Chemical Brothers in 1995.
Their debut album, Exit Planet Dust, appeared that year and established the basic elements of their style: forceful drum programming, distorted electronics, looping samples and an instinct for dramatic arrangement. Tracks such as "Chemical Beats" and "Life Is Sweet" helped translate their DJ sensibility into album form. Their residency at London's Heavenly Sunday Social further strengthened their reputation, while the mix album Brothers Gonna Work It Out later documented the breadth of their club influences.
The Chemical Brothers reached a wider international audience with Dig Your Own Hole (1997). Built around singles including "Block Rockin' Beats" and "Setting Sun," the album made their aggressive, psychedelic approach a mainstream success. "Setting Sun," featuring Oasis singer Noel Gallagher, became one of the duo's most prominent collaborations. The follow-up, Surrender (1999), expanded their palette with more melodic writing and prominent vocal performances. "Hey Boy Hey Girl," "Let Forever Be" and "Out of Control" demonstrated their ability to move between rave propulsion, pop songwriting and experimental production without losing their identity.
Their work has always had a strong visual component. Videos for "Let Forever Be" and "Star Guitar," both associated with director Michel Gondry, turned repetition, movement and editing into extensions of the music. Other notable films for songs such as "Block Rockin' Beats," "Elektrobank," "Hey Boy Hey Girl," "The Test" and "Galvanize" helped make the duo's catalog especially recognizable in the music-video era.
The Chemical Brothers continued to change direction across Come with Us (2002), Push the Button (2005), We Are the Night (2007) and Further (2010). "Galvanize," featuring Q-Tip, became one of their defining later singles, while Further emphasized atmosphere and sequencing and avoided guest vocalists. They also produced the soundtrack for the film Hanna (2011) and released Don't Think (2012), a concert film directed by longtime collaborator Adam Smith.
After Born in the Echoes (2015), which included contributions from Beck, St. Vincent and Q-Tip, the duo returned with No Geography in 2019. The album paired stripped-back rhythmic ideas with expansive electronic production and earned major critical recognition, including multiple Grammy Awards. Their tenth studio album, For That Beautiful Feeling, followed in 2023, featuring collaborations with Beck and Halo Maud.
Across more than three decades, the Chemical Brothers have remained unusually consistent as both recording artists and live performers. Their enduring importance lies in their ability to make club music feel enormous without abandoning experimentation, and to connect underground dance culture with the scale and immediacy of rock and pop.
