Synopsis

Sepultura perform "Arise" in a stark desert landscape, surrounded by dust, rock and the visual language of a world after catastrophe. The band plays amid images of destruction, while masked, Christ-like figures appear crucified against the barren setting. Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed in California's Death Valley, using the desert's severe, empty landscape to reinforce the song's apocalyptic atmosphere.

• The crucifixion imagery features figures wearing gas masks, combining religious symbolism with imagery associated with war, chemical disaster and societal collapse.

• MTV in the United States refused to broadcast the video because of its blasphemous and disturbing imagery. The ban nevertheless helped give the clip a notorious reputation among metal fans.

• "Arise" was the first official single from Sepultura's fourth studio album, also titled *Arise*, released in 1991.
