Synopsis

Vanilla Ice takes over a packed nightclub stage, delivering his rap adaptation of Wild Cherry's funk classic while DJs, dancers, and the crowd amplify the party atmosphere. The video is built around performance energy rather than a conventional storyline: Ice works the microphone, showcases his dance moves, and trades the spotlight with his crew as the camera moves through the venue. Its bright, fast-cut presentation captures the late-1990 mainstream rap aesthetic and frames Ice as a commanding live entertainer.

Factoids & Trivia

• The music video was released in 1990 as a promotional clip for Vanilla Ice's version of "Play That Funky Music," which appeared on his album To the Extreme.

• The track was originally issued as the first single from the earlier album Hooked, with "Ice Ice Baby" placed on the B-side. After radio listeners and DJs favored "Ice Ice Baby," the song was reissued during Vanilla Ice's commercial breakthrough.

• Vanilla Ice's recording reworks the 1976 Wild Cherry hit rather than presenting it as a straight cover. The original songwriter, Robert Parissi, was initially left uncredited and later received a reported $500,000 settlement after legal action.

• The clip was later included in the VHS release Play That Funky Music White Boy, a home-video compilation built around Vanilla Ice's music videos.

• The video received heavy rotation on MTV Europe in March 1991, helping extend the song's visibility beyond its initial U.S. release.

• The single reached No. 4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 10 on the U.K. singles chart.
