Synopsis

Tina Turner plays a confident, mischievous woman determined to get the attention of a distracted lawyer. Dressed in a striking red minidress, she tries flirtation, games of chess and Scrabble, and increasingly absurd visual tricks to break through his professional composure. The playful fantasy reaches its most surreal point with an enormous telephone and a statue-like version of the lawyer. By the end, her persistence wins out, and the pair leave together hand in hand.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Typical Male" was released in 1986 as the lead single from Turner's album "Break Every Rule," following the major success of "Private Dancer."
  • The song was written by Terry Britten and Graham Lyle, the same songwriting team behind "What's Love Got to Do with It."
  • Phil Collins played drums on the recording, while Tim Cappello contributed the prominent saxophone part.
  • The single reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for three consecutive weeks. Janet Jackson's "When I Think of You" and Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" kept it from the top spot.
  • The video's exaggerated office props and comic physical scale turn a familiar romantic pursuit into a deliberately cartoonish 1980s pop fantasy.
  • Turner performed "Typical Male" at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards in New York.
